  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

    In 1901, the Duke and Duchess of York (later King George V and Queen Mary), toured the British Empire. Their tour included Australia and New Zealand. The purpose of the visit was to officially open the first Federal Parliament in the Exhibition Buildings of Melbourne in 1901. Whilst here, the Duke of York presented thousands of specially designed South African War medals to colonial troops for their participation in the South African War of 1899–1902.

  • Scope and Content
    Includes:
    (i) Typed, form letter addressed to the President and Members of the Art Society of New South Wales, dated 29 May 1901, and signed in ink by His Royal Highness, George, Prince of Cornwall and York. The letter is two pages in length and is written on Government House Sydney letterhead. The letter makes reference to "my dear father, His Majesty the King" and to "the memory of my beloved Grandmother, our ever-lamented and revered Queen". The letter is glued to board;
    (ii) Handwritten letter, dated 13 August 1897, addressed to William Lister Lister, Vice President of the Art Society of New South Wales. The letter refers to an album of sketches drawn by members of the Art Society of New South Wales that was presented to Queen Victoria in commemoration of her Diamond Jubilee. The letter is one page and is incomplete. It is written on New South Wales Government letterhead and is glued to board.
