  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

The 13th Battalion was raised in September 1914 following the outbreak of war. The Battalion took part in the landing at Anzac Cove and after time spent in Egypt, embarked for France in June 1916. The Battalion was stationed at Picquigny, France from 24 September until 13 November 1918, and whilst there Captain Thomas White began a battalion newspaper, the 'Two Blues'. The journal continued whilst paper was available, but stopped once paper became scarce. On All Saints' Day (1 November 1918) the Battalion gathered with the residents of Picquigny and marched to the British Cemetery for a ceremony to honour fallen allied soldiers; several addresses were made and speakers included the Cure of the Parish and the schoolmaster. 'Two Blues' refers to the colour patch of the 13th Battalion.

Before the war, Thomas White was a Headmaster. He had previous military training with the University Scouts and the 13th Battalion Militia. After the war he returned to Australia and continued teaching and completed writing the history of the 13th Battalion. He died in 1962.
