  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

During both World Wars I and II and the period between them, badges were frequently used to generate income and improve morale through nationalistic designs and sentiments. Button Day appeals were used to raise funds for particular causes, often identified by flower names such as Rose Day or Waratah Day.

In addition to a variety of flower day badges, this collection holds a range of badges supporting war causes such as Red Triangle Day during WW1, and the WW2 Tin Hat Day appeals. Some badges depict political leaders of the time including Joseph Stalin, Winston Churchill and the King Of England. Other charitable appeals are represented including badges for the Red Cross, Legacy, The Australian Comforts Fund and The Hospital Saturday Appeals.

The collection was suggested to Sir William Dixson by his housekeeper, Miss Turner.
