Douglas Mawson (1882-1958), leader of Australasian Antarctic Expedition, landed his Main Party at Cape Denison, Commonwealth Bay on 8 January 1912. John George Hunter (1888-1964) a University of Sydney science graduate, was 23 when taken on by Mawson as a biologist for the main base in Adélie Land. He was to spend a year at Cape Denison, followed by a summer cruise aboard Aurora in the 1913–14 summer.
Hunter’s main task at Cape Denison was to investigate all forms of life, including swimming and bottom-dwelling marine animals and plants (dredged by hand), seals, penguins and other birds, and the micro-organisms that made their home on and inside these creatures.

Biological log kept during the Australasian Antarctic Expedition, May 1912-January 1913 along the Adelie Coast and Commonwealth Bay. The entries include information on where specimens were found, the latitude, how they were obtained and the sea depth if the specimen was taken from the sea.
