  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

    Thomas Percy Eagles (1900-1967), graphic artist, was born in England.
    He lived in Sydney from 1924 to 1934 before moving to Brisbane, QLD, where he lived from 1934 until approximately 1965. An art teacher, he taught at Brisbane Technical College, the Department of Education and contributed sketches to magazines such as The Sportsman. He was known for his technical skill and intensity of expression in his works.

    Collection contains
    1. Various magazine and newspaper cuttings, 1927-1968, on Percy Eagles and his art;
    2. Copy of the birth certificate of Thomas Percy Eagles, 9 March 1900, and the marriage certificate of his parents Thomas William Eagles and Mary Jane Palistri, 3 August 1895;
    3. Letters of condolence to Mrs Eagles following Percy's death; correspondents include Antonio Dattillo-Rubbo, Arthur W. Deane and George Feather Lawrence;
    4. Documents relating to Percy's admission into the Masonic Lodge Kelso-Campsie, 1924;
    5. Passport issued to Thomas Percy Eagles, 1964, Visitor's permit to Fiji, 1964, and certificate of smallpox vaccination, 1964;
    6. Shell driver's log book that contains handwritten entries for a car trip 4 December 1965-23 December 1965; includes 6 black and white photographs from a 1966 painting trip; 7. 2 ring-bound folders containing handwritten notes and ink sketches regarding lettering and drawing techniques (no name);
    8. Certificates presented to Percy Eagles from the Royal Art Society of N.S.W, between 1915-1927.
