Sir Frederick Matthew Darley (1830-1910), chief justice and lieutenant-governor, was born on 18 September 1830 in Ireland. He sailed with his wife in the Swiftsure from Plymouth to Australia in January 1862. On 2 June he was admitted to the New South Wales Bar.

Cecil West Darley, who emigrated with Frederick, became Chief Engineer of New South Wales and supervised the construction of Sydney Harbour Docks.

Includes 3 letters (1) handwritten letter from Frederick Darley to an unknown correspondent, no date, annotated as Tuesday, 137 King Street; (2) handwritten letter from Frederick Darley to an unknown correspondent, dated 3rd August 1868, 137 King Street. On the back of the letter is written in pencil 'Letter to Hill'; (3) handwritten letter from Cecil Darley to his brother Frederick, dated 3 August 1868. The letter is written on paper containing Cecil's letterhead.
