The List was created in response to concern amongst public libraries in N.S.W. over the lack of interest in reading amongst young people between the ages of 13-16.
The List was basically a questionnaire that was sent out to select, well-known individuals who listed the books they enjoyed when they were aged between 13 and 16, as well as books that made an impression on them.
The List was then distributed as a leaflet amongst public libraries around N.S.W. in the hope it would raise interest in libraries and the services they offer.

This collection includes 11 handwritten or typed questionnaires from the following individuals: Simon Burke, actor; W.H. Butler, naturalist; Dame Edna Everage, personality; Bob Hudson, disc jockey; Margaret Frost, equestrian; the Honourable A.J. Grassby, Commissioner for Community Relations; Donald Horne, author; Michael Liubinskas, footballer; Senator Susan Ryan, politician; Ivan Southall, author and Patrick White, novelist.

Also included are two copies of the printed leaflet titled The List that were distributed amongst public libraries.
