  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

William Wilkinson Wardell (1823-1899), architect and civil servant, was born in London in 1823. Educated as an engineer he practised in London before working in Westminster and part of Middlesex. Between 1846-57 he designed some thirty Catholic churches, including the Holy Trinity Church, Brook Green, Hammersmith, Middlesex. Wardell migrated to Australia, settling in Melbourne in 1858. On 7 March 1859 he was appointed inspecting clerk of works and chief architect in the Department of Works and Buildings and on 7 January 1861 was promoted inspector-general of public works, with the right of private practice. He was responsible for the construction of all public buildings in Victoria. Before entering the civil service, Wardell had contracted to design and supervise the construction of St Patrick's Cathedral, Melbourne, one of his greatest works; he also designed St Mary's Cathedral, Sydney. Wardell died of heart failure and pleurisy on 19 November 1899 in his home, Upton Grange, North Sydney.
