  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

    Sydney Evan Jones (1887-1948), a medical practitioner and psychiatrist, studied medicine at the University of Sydney, graduating in 1910. After a year as a resident medical officer at the Royal Prince Alfred Hospital in Sydney he applied to join the Australasian Antarctic Expedition led by Douglas Mawson. Archibald McLean, Jones' friend and fellow graduate, was appointed as the expedition’s chief medical officer. Jones took part in several sledging journeys from the Western Base on the Shackleton Ice Shelf, including leading the party which explored the coast to the west reaching Gaussberg.

    Comprises 12 photographic prints of views of the Western Base of the Australasian Antarctic Expedition, 1911-1914.
