Jeffrey Smart (b. 1921), realist painter, grew up in North Adelaide. He went to art school and then began teaching at Goodwood Boys Technical School.

In 1948 he travelled to Europe, returning to Australia in 1951. Shortly after this he gained a role on the ABC Children's Hour - initially a radio program that later moved to television. He joined the radio team as a young artist, and took the name of Phidias for the Argonaut's Club broadcasts.

Smart returned to Europe in 1962, moving to Italy. In 1971 he moved into his house, Posticcia Nuova, in Arezzo.

His autobiography, "Not Quite Straight" was published in 1996.
