William Austin Horn was a mining magnate, pastoralist and politician, who organised and equipped the 1894 Horn Scientific Expedition to Central Australia which hoped to find evidence of older forms of life in the MacDonnell Ranges.

Shirley Bavin was the eldest daughter of Sir Thomas Rainsford Bavin, former Premier of New South Wales, and Edyth Ellen (nee Winchombe), and author.
