Wiiliam George Pennington was born in London and qualified as a solicitor in Britain, where he practised for nearly 10 years. He arrived in New South Wales in 1849 where he practised as a solicitor and worked as a law reporter. In 1863 he was Secretary, Court of Claims and was with the Land Titles Office from 1867 until 1868. Pennington was Secretary of the Floral and Horticultural Society in 1851; treasurer and solicitor to Sydney Mechanics School of Arts in 1855 and trustee of Victoria Club in 1858.

This handwritten, unsigned, biographical sketch, dated 1 December 1916, is written by an unknown author. The document begins as a letter and is addressed to "Dear Nick"; reference is made in the letter to the deaths of J.M. Stevens, 5th November 1916, and James Norton, both of whom were personal friends of the author.
The sketch appears to have been written with the intention of the information being included in a publication of some sort.

Glued to the front of the enclosure is a handwritten note listing two references to publications that contain further information on the career of William George Pennington.
