  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

Janet Frew Waterhouse (1885-1973) was born in Kilmarnock, Scotland. After working as a Pupil Teacher at Kilmarnock Academy she proceeded to Glasgow University where she obtained First Class Certificates in the Ordinary and Honours Classes of French and German, graduating with Diploma of Education in 1909, and a Masters in Modern Languages (French and German), in 1912. Whilst undertaking studies in Scotland she visited Germany to attend lectures at University of Marburg in 1905 and 1908, and also attended classes at the International Guild, Paris, obtaining Certificate of Merit, in 1906 and 1908. It was during this period that she met Gowrie Waterhouse at the residence of the Motte family in Paris, 1907. They were married on 1 October 1912 in Janet’s home town.

After a six month honeymoon in Europe Janet moved to Australia in May 1913 when she and Gowrie Waterhouse conceptualised the design of their home ‘Eryldene’, in Gordon, which they named after Janet’s family home in Kilmarnock. Eryldene was designed by architect William Hardy Wilson (Billy), between 1913 and 1914.

Janet Waterhouse was a renowned ikebana practitioner. In the 1950s, as president of the Garden Club of Australia, Janet met Norman Sparnon, an Ikebana expert who became her friend and mentor. In 1957 Janet produced special flower arrangements at Kirribilli House for the visit of the Japanese Prime Minister. She was also a founding member and President of the Sydney chapter of Ikebana International in 1959. In 1969 the Janet Waterhouse Award was established by Garden Club of Australia.
