    Neil Buhrich was born in Sydney in 1941. He went to East Lindfield Primary School and North Sydney Boys High. He studied medicine at Sydney University and psychiatry in London. He worked in hospitals in Sydney and Kuala Lumpur and was Associate Professor in the Department of Psychological Medicine at the University of Sydney from 1999-2004. In 1999 he was awarded an Order of Australia.
