On 28 December, 1989, an earthquake struck the New South Wales city of Newcastle. One of the worst affected sites was the Newcastle Workers' Club, a large building in which nine people died and which was all but completely destroyed. About one year later, a group of community cultural development workers from Newcastle Trades Hall Council decided to produce a documentary play about the collapse of the Workers' Club.

'Aftershocks', a project of the Newcastle Workers' Cultural Action Committee, documents the earthquake and its aftermath. It consists of interviews gathered from people who were directly affected by the destruction of the Club: members, staff, patrons and friends.
