George Barney, 1792-1862 of the Royal Engineers effectively acted as civil engineer for the colony of New South Wales. In September 1837 this was formally acknowledged by approval for him to be paid an allowance for superintending civil works. Gas was first used for lighting in Sydney in 1841. - Description source
