Ann Carr-Boyd attended Queenwood School and completed a Master of Arts at the University of Sydney. During her studies she had undertaken important pioneering research into music in colonial Australia. She won the Sydney Moss Scholarship and went to London where she undertook composition studies with Peter Racine Fricker and later Alexander Goehr.

As well as being a composer and recording artist, she has talked on radio programs, presented master classes and given numerous papers in Hong Kong, the USA and throughout Australia on Australian composition.

Carr-Boyd was brought up in a musical and artistic family. Her mother was an artist, while her grandfather Albert and father and uncle (Norbert and Charles Wentzel) were all professional musicians. The family tradition in music continues with her children, as well as her brother Peter Wentzel and his children.
