  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

    George Langley Leathes Lawson was born in Egremont, Cumberland in London in 1858, he gained his medical degree in Scotland and travelled to Australia in the 1880's, then later volunteered to serve in the Boer War (1899-1902) in the 6th Imperial Bushmen regiment, reaching the rank of luitenant on June 1 1907. He is listed on the honour role of The Imperial Bushman's Contingent. King George VI bestowed a Territorial Declaration on Dr George Lawson in 1931. Dr Lawson also served in both the WWI (2nd/3rd City of London field ambulance) and WWII (in France and then England). Dr Lawson also administered medicine to the people of the gold fields in Bega, Balranald and later in Gosford and finally the Nepean Hospital. He passed away in 1948 at Rooty Hill, leaving behind hiw second wife and 2 children.
  • Scope and Content
    MANUSCRIPT MATERIAL
    Included in the first 9 boxes of this collection are the University degrees of Dr George Lawson and some family members, correspondence to and from Dr George Lawson and his extended family during the Boer War, framed photographs, accounts and shares statements from Liverpool England. Also included are medical recipes for aseptic soap, liquid soap, lozenges, stamps from Australia, Nigeria and UK, diaries, Christmas cards, bank books, family history, memorial program, negatives and transcribed letters.

    Box 10 contains a framed poem with signatures ; 2 bound illuminated manuscripts and sketchbook of Dr George Lawson.

    R 2359 (Box 11) contains the following items:

    Double ended Ruby Victorian salts bottle (with prescriptions),
    1 travelling mess kit containing portable knife and fork set
    1 bone butter knife
    2 sterling silver spoons (1 with initals G.L.L.Lawson),
    1 small painted gold portrait of an 18 years old G. L. L. Lawson,
    1 brass sewing kit tin and a bullet with a pencil inside,
    1 travelling pocket surgical instrument set
    A military pouche containing letters, some half written.

    3 black and white photographic prints, including 2nd/3rd City of London field ambulance before proceeding to France, 1916.
