  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

    Robert Wisdom, 1830-1888, barrister and politician, was born at Lancashire England and arrived in Sydney with his parents in 1834. He was admitted to the NSW Bar in 1861 and appointed a QC in 1879. Wisdom was elected member of the NSW Legislative Assembly for the seats of Goldfields (1859-1864) The Lower Hunter (1864-1870) and Morpeth (1874-1887). He was appointed a member of the NSW Legislative Council 1887 but did not take up his seat.[ref:C.N. Connolly, Biographical Register of the New South Wales Parliament 1856-1901;ADB 6]

    PAPERS

    1. Letter from W.W. Stephen, Attorney General's Dept, 8 April 1886. Concerns his appointment as Queens Counsel.

    2. Letter from Chancery of the Order of Saint Michael and Saint George, Downing Street, 29 April 1887. Concerns the documents sent to him on his honour of K.C.M.G.

    3. Grant of the Dignity of a Knight Commander of the Most Distinguished, Order of Saint Michael and Saint George to Robert Wisdom, Esquire. Signed 'Victoria', 18 April, 1887.

    4. Warrant for the Dispensation with the Investiture of Robert Wisdom, Esquire, as a Knight Commander of the Most Distinguished, Order of Saint Michael and Saint George. Signed 'Victoria', 18 April, 1887. Bound with blue ribbon.

    5. Folder titled, Statutes of the Most Distinguished Order of Saint Michael and Saint George 1877-79-87.

    Documents have the seal 'Auspicium melioris aevi', translates to 'an omen of a better age', motto of the Order of St. Michael and St. George.
