Janis Wilton interviewed Valerie Harant in August 1978, for a study entitled 'Refugees : intellectual roots and impact of European migration to Australia, 1933-1956', run by Dr R J B Bosworth of the University of Sydney History Department. That study was a precursor to the subsequent oral history project initiated by the Ethnic Affairs Commission of NSW in 1981, a larger collection of immigrant recordings and also held in the SLNSW (Janis Wilton also had a major involvement in that project as interviewer and project manager.)

Valerie Harant was born in Vienna in 1890 and trained at university as a musician. She came to Australia just before the outbreak of WWII, and settled in Melbourne, where she was active in the Austrian Club.
