William Effingham Lawrence arrived in Van Diemen's Land in 1823, where he took up a large grant known as Formosa, South of Launceston. During the following years, he acquired a number of other properties in the region. When Lawrence died in 1841, Ronald Campbell Gunn was appointed managing agent of the properties.
