George Chidgey was born in London in 1815. He emigrated to Sydney in 1832 and was apprenticed as a carpenter, joiner and builder. After completing his indenture he moved to Melbourne where he married Margaret Carton in 1841. They moved to Sydney in 1842 and opened a grocery shop in Balmain.
