  • General note

Sir Thomas Makdougall Brisbane (1773–1860) was the sixth Governor of New South Wales, from 1821-1825. Brisbane was born in Largs, Ayshire, Scotland on 23 July 1773 and attended the University of Edinburgh and the English Academy, Kensington. In 1789 Brisbane was commissioned an ensign in the 38th Regiment, eventually promoted to brigadier-general in 1812. Brisbane married Anna Maria in 1819, daughter of Henry Hay Makdougall of Makerstoun, Scotland. In November 1820 Brisbane was appointed Governor of New South Wales on Wellington’s advice and took over from Governor Lachlan Macquarie in December 1821. Brisbane systematized the administration of the convict system, reformed the currency, abolished censorship of the press, and built an observatory at Parramatta. Brisbane River is named after him as is the city of Brisbane, Queensland. Predeceased by his four children, Brisbane died on 27 January 1860 in Largs, Ayshire, Scotland.
