    John Murphy (1829-1870), painter and explorer, was born in Pembrokeshire, Wales, on 31 January 1829. He died on 9 January 1870.
    In 1844 Murphy was appointed one of the four European members of Leichhardt's Port Essington (NT) expedition. He was only 15 years old.

  • Scope and Content
    Autograph letter signed by John Murphy, from the Darling Downs, whilst on the Ludwig Leichhardt expedition to Port Essington. He writes about their cart breaking down and it being replaced by 9 bullocks, and of not having seen much of the Downs themselves.

    Includes a letter from Father (?) W. Newman, 4 May 1846, written from the Royal Society Gardens, Van Dieman's Land. He writes of giving 'the Doctor' seeds to plant during the expedition and of receiving a package of seeds in return.
