The Holey dollar and dump were introduced in New South Wales in 1812 to relieve the shortage of coins in the colony. They remained legal tender until approximately 1829. The coins were cut and restruck from coins originally issued by mints in Spain and South America. The outer ring and dump were counterstamped with the name of the colony and the new value - five shillings for the holey dollar and 15 pence for the dump. They bore the date 1813.
