  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

    The Parks and Playgrounds Movement of New South Wales was established in Sydney in the early 1930s. Its first secretary was C. E. W. Bean. Its aims were to promote the preservation of adequate recreation spaces and reserves for flora and fauna; to ensure that existing and future parks and reserves are properly used; and to maintain the right of all Australians to enjoy the natural beauties of Australia and of healthy open air sport and play.

    These papers had been given to Barry O'Rourke from W.L. Hume, past Honorary Secretary of the Parks and Playgrounds Movement, for the purposes of Barry O'Rourke's research.

Hume from Charles Spark regarding land in Manly, Ashfield and Dee Why, 1951-1952. Letter to Barry O'Rourke from W. L. Hume concerning the history and background of the Parks and Playgrounds Movement, 26 Mar. 1977.

    Handwritten notes, ca. 1945 quoting from articles in Sydney newspapers, together with handwritten notes about various municipal council minutes and the Royal Commission on Greater Sydney, in regard to various councils with a particular emphasis on Randwick. Includes background notes about amalgamations in 1945 of the eastern suburbs of Sydney, as well as other areas, into a Greater Sydney Council.
