In 1855-1856, using schooners Tom Thumb and Messenger for transport to and from the Gulf of Carpentaria, Gregory commanded the North Australian Exploring Expedition sent to discover traces of Ludwig Leichhardt. He followed the Victoria River to its source, then crossed Northern Australia to Burketown in Queensland and reached Brisbane via the Gilbert, Burdekin and Fitzroy Rivers. - Description source
