  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

Cyrille Pierre Theodore Laplace, French naval officer and navigator, was born at sea in 1793. He went to sea at an early age, and saw action in the West Indies and in the Atlantic and Indian Oceans. In December 1829, he was appointed Captain of La Favorite in and expedition aiming to restore French influence in Indo-Chino, and to give protection and encouragement to French traders. Laplace visited Ceylon, Madras, Singapore, Manila and Canton before arriving in Indo-China, where his mission was unsuccessful, in December 1830. He then surveyed the Natunas and Ananbas before continuing the voyage to Surabaya, Hobart, Sydney, New Zealand and Valponaise and finally arriving back in France in April 1832. Excluding Indo-China, LaPlace's voyage was very successful
