Rene Primevere Lesson , 1794-1849, French naval doctor, sailed in teh corvette, La Coquille, and scientist and artist on Duperrey's voyage to the Pacific and Australia 1822-1825, During ship's 2 month visit to Port Jackson, the French made valuable scientific observations. Lesson visited the Nepean River, the Blue Mountains, and Bathurst, noting animals, birds and reptiles. Lesson published several works on natural history and the Pacific Islands.

Lesson's account of the voyage of La Coquille to the South Seas and Australasia leaving 11 August 1822 and arriving back in France 22 March 1825. Included among places visited and visited are the Canary Isles, Brazil, the Falkland Isles, Chile, Peru, Tahiti, Society Islands, New Zealand, Waigeo Island, the Moluccas, Sydney, Bay of Islands (New Zealand), Rotorua, and Caroline Islands. There are detailed descriptions of the flora and fauna, and natives and their customs, of the places visited. The latter part of the voyage, from the Caroline Islands back to France is described very briefly
