  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

Pedro Fernandes de Quiros, navigator, was born in Portugal in 1565. He was chief pilot of Mendana's expedition to the Solomon Islands in 1595-1596, which discovered the Marquesas and Santa Cruz, where Mendana died. Quiiros took charge of the expedition, proceeding to the Phillippines. In 1605, Quiros, in command of 3 ships, sailed from Peru to search for the Great South Land.

In May 1606, he sighted the New Hebrides, which he named La Austrialia del Espiritu Santo, thinking he had discoverd the Great South Land. On leaving, Quiros was seperated from the other 2 ships under Torres and continued the voyage to Mexico, whilst Torres sailed between New Guinea and Australia, before finally getting to Mexico. Quiros arrived in Spain in 1607 and spent the next 7 years petitioning the Spanish government to give him a vessel to carry on his explorations. Fifty of these petitions, or memorials, are known. In 1614, permission was given, but Quiros died on the journey from Spain to Peru
