In October 1616, the Dutch mariner, Dirck Hartog, in the ship Eendracht, landed on what is now Dirck Hartog Island on the west coast of Western Australia, and left an inscribed plate commemorating his visit. In Februray 1697, another Dutch mariner, Willem de Vlamingh, landed and discovered the plate, which he replaced by another, commemorating both the Hartog visit and his own. This plate was found lying in the sand by Baudin in 1801, and was re-nailed to a post. In 1818, it was removed by Louis de Freycinet, who took it to France, where it was lost until 1940. The French government presented it to the Australian government in 1947
