    Thomas Beckford Simpson (1808-1853), ship captain, sailed from Glasgow to New South Wales in the Fleetwood, 1839. He captained the barque Hope and took convicts to Norfolk Island in 1840, took the barques General Palmer and the Freak to China on trading ventures and undertook to search for the bodies and papers of Edmund Kennedy in 1849 and Leichhardt in 1852
