ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

Fitness Exchange, later FitX Gym, was a LGBT-operated and volunteer-run gym catering to the gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender communities. It opened in 1978 on Albion Street, Surry Hills and was incorporated in 1984. The gym moved multiple times over the years, moving into premises in Crown St East Sydney in 1982, to Chippendale in 1988, to East Sydney in 1991, to the Pride Centre, Surry Hills, in 1996, and the final location: AIDS Council of New South Wales (ACON) headquarters on Commonwealth St.

FitX Gym operated programs specifically catered for people living with HIV/AIDS.
