  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

    Edmund Besley Court Kennedy, 1818-1848, a surveyor, arrived in Sydney, N.S.W., in 1840 and was appointed assistant surveyor in the Surveyor-General's Department. From 1840-1843 he worked under Charles Tyers in the Portland Bay area, Victoria and from 1845-1847 he travelled with Sir Thomas Mitchell's expedition to find an overland route to Port Essington, Northern Territory. However, the expedition only reached the Victoria River. In March 1847 Kennedy led an expedition back to the Victoria which he renamed the Barcoo. In April, 1848, Kennedy again set sail from Sydney on an expedition to Cape York Peninsula, landing at Rockingham Bay. After experiencing many hardships he was killed by natives there in December 1848. Kennedy's parents were Colonel Thomas Kennedy and Mary Ann Kennedy nee Smith. Mary Ann Kennedy and Elizabeth Kennedy were his sisters. Reverend John Doyle Kennedy was his brother
