  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

George Kellick was a printer by trade and eventually attained a senior position in the Government Printing Office in Sydney. His mother, Ann Kellick, nee Nichols was the daughter of First Fleet convict John Nichols. She married John Kellick who managed a shipping company and who built Kellick's Wharf at Darling Harbour and also had interests in a building business. He owned several properties in Phillip Street and the Macarthur Pyrmont Estate. By the 1850s, however he was in serious financial difficulty and his shipping business collapsed. George Kellick's brother William Kellick was a miner on the gold fields at Bendigo, Kiandra, Lambing Flat and the Lachlan.

  • Scope and Content
This collection contains letters written by George Kellick whilst a young student at St James' Grammar School, Sydney to his parents. Other letters are written by William Kellick mostly addressed to George. These letters describe William's experiences on the goldfields of Bendigo, Kiandra (Snowy Mountains), Burrangong (Young) and the Lachlan (Forbes). They provide a first-hand account of the experiences of a miner, reflecting the ebb and flow of a miner's fortunes and existence. This collection also contains letters from Harry Stephenson, writing to his estranged wife Annie from the central Victorian goldfields at Heathcote. Annie became George Kellick's wife in 1874. Other letters cover topics such as the New Zealand gold mines, references to the sale of the family property at Phillip Street Sydney, letters written to George in his capacity as a printer, two of which cover philatelic matters, as well as letters about the schooling of Arthur Kellick who was George and Annie's son and a letter from a friend of Arthur's regarding the London Mine at Parkes.
