John Gould, ornithologist, came to Australia in 1838 and spent two years in collecting, personally exploring a great part of New South Wales, South Australia and Tasmania. On his return to England in 1840, he began the publication of his 'Birds of Australia' in seven volumes. In 1844, he published monograph of 'The Kangaroos of Australia' and between 1845 and 1863, 'Mammals of Australia' in three volumes.

'Gould Papers
These three volumes of correspondence and other papers cover the period 1838-1861 and shed much fresh light on Gould's visit to Australia 1838-1840, and especially on his employment of John Gilbert as his assistant in collecting notes and specimens.
Presented by A. H. Chisholm, Esq.
The son of a working gardener, Gould by perseverance and love of his subject achieved great success as an ornithologist.
He published a magnificent series of folio volumes with illustrated plates and scientific descriptions. Altogether there are 41 folio volumes containing 2,999 plates, a wonderful achievement. The works on Australian Birds and Mammals are largely the result of his visit to Australia.'
