Samuel James Whitmee, born in England, was a Congregational Minister working for the London Missionary Society in Samoa from 1863 to 1869. He returned to England in 1879, and was Minister of Congregational churches in Dublin and Bristol. From 1891 to 1894, Whitmee returned to missionary work in Samoa. He was interested in the languages, ethnology and flora and fauna of Samoa and neighbouring Pacific Islands, and some of his papers were published by learned associations, including the Zoological Society, the Victoria Institute and the Anthropological Institute - Finding AidsContents list available in the Mitchell Library Reading Room -
