  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

John Shaw Neilson is widely regarded as one of Australia's finest lyric poets. Neilson's formal education was limited and he spent much of his life as a farm-hand and itinerant worker. He was largely self-taught in poetic techniques but received valuable advice and encouragement from the critic and editor A. G. Stephens. His first poem was published in the Bulletin in 1896 and his first published volume of poems appeared in 1919.
