  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

Following two successful expeditions to the Pacific, Jules Sebastien Cesar d'Urville, French naval officer and navigator, was appointed to command the expedition to explore principally the Antarctic, with the ships l'Astrolobe (la Coquille renamed) and La Zelee. He left France September 1837, and after making surveys in the South Orkneys and South Shetlands, proceeded into the Pacific, where he made scientific surveys in the islands lying between Tahiti and New Guinea, and among the island of the North Pacific. The vessels arrived in Hobart in December 1839, and in 1840 he discovered Adelie hard in Antarctica, and visited and explored New Zealand before returning to France in November 1840. Included are descriptions of Australian Aborigines and the work of various missions in the Pacific Islands. (La Guillow was surgeon on la Zelee)
