O'Connell concerning the British Legion in Spain 1835-1837, where he rose to the rank of General, and later in New South Wales where he accompanied his father Sir M. C. P. O'Connell, as military secretary in 1838, and in Queensland where the son was appointed government resident in Gladstone in 1854. The correspondence is both official and private.
