Arthur James Vogan joined the 'Bonito' expedition to British New Guinea for the Royal Geographical Society (Australasia), 1885. In 1886 his illustrated account of the eruption of Tarawera, New Zealand earned his appointment as an illustrator for the Illustrated London News. He was made a Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society (England). Vogan travelled extensively in Australia both privately and as a reporter on gold prospects. In the Boer War he was a Sergeant in the Prince of Wales Light Horse Brigade, 1901. He published a number of books. - Description source
