Josiah Thompson was born in England, 28 October 1816. In 1843 he was ordained as a priest and entered the Royal Navy as a chaplain. In 1866 he left the navy, returning to England to do parish work until his death on 5 December, 1890 - Scope and ContentJournal of a voyage from Hobart to Portsmouth, England, via Sydney, New Zealand, Tonga, Tahiti, Chile, Peru, Mexico, Rio de Janeiro on H.M.S. Maeander, 20 April 1850-26 July 1851. References are made to Sir Oswald Brierly who was also on board
