    Samuel Nisbet Hogg was born in India in 1849 and moved to Australia with his parents as a child. He was educated in Glebe and was Manager of the Balmain Branch of the Bank of New South Wales from 1888-1911. He contributed articles about Balmain to various newspapers, some of which appeared in a series entitled 'Balmain past and present'.

  • Scope and Content
    This volume contains miscellaneous information about Balmain in chapters covering Balmain's origins, the recollections of early settlers, Balmain's political, municipal and economic history as well as information about schools and churches, the Balmain Hospital and Balmain Benevolent Society, transport, Freemasonry, industry and sport. The second half of the volume is dedicated to biographical sketches of prominent men from Balmain, including: Mervin Archdale, William Balmain, James M. Banks, Edmund Thomas Blacket, John Booth, Frederick Bracegirdle, John Broomfield, E. W. Cameron, Charles Ulic Carruthers, George Clubb, Quarton Levitt Deloitte, Owen S. Evans, George R. Elliott, J. P. Franki, A. H. Fitzhardinge, Sir Thomas Henley, Charles Gilbert Heydon, William Morris Hughes, William Alston Hutchinson, Frank Iredale, Theodore James Jacques, W. Hugh Mocatta, Hugh Morwick, John Murray, William Lloyd Murdoch, Sir Henry Parkes, Thomas Stephenson Rowntree, Nicol Drysdale Stenhouse, Achille Simonetti, Frekerick Robert Spofforth, John Storey, Norman selfe, John Joseph Therry, Frederick Henry Trounton, William Walker Russell Watson.

    This volume comprises typescript text, photographs of buildings and people, an original sketch of local sculptor Achilles Simonetti by A. J. Fisher (i.e. A. J. Fischer) and newscuttings pasted in and annotated by the author. It also includes letters to the author about his manuscript including 2 from the Prime Minister, W. M. Hughes. A printed card pasted on the page before the foreword, explains that as the cost of publishing is prohibitive, he is intending to lodge a typed copy of the work in the Mitchell Library. A forword is written by Aubrey Halloran, President of the Royal Australian Historical Society. Includes a table of contents and list of illustrations. There is also an index to the biographical sketches on pages 134-138.
