Lachlan Macquarie, 1762-1824, Governor of New South Wales was born in the Hebrides. He joined the army, saw service in India and Egypt, and in 1809 was appointed Governor of New South Wales. During his term of office, Macquarie was promoted Major-General. He made many reforms, including remodelling the public departments, erecting public buildings, and establishing charitable institutions. Macquarie resigned as Governor in 1820, and returned to Scotland in 1822

Autograph letter signed while Macquarie was Governor of New south Wales. Contains three letters to Thomas Coutts, that he is sending copies of the Sydney Gazette, and giving details of the progress and prosperity of New South Wales, three to Reverend Richard Hill regarding the Male Orphan Institution, and letter and copy to Matthew Pierce relating to land grants

Also includes typescript transcripts of the letters to Coutts, and one to Rowland Hassall regarding cattle
