    William Stewart, 1769-1854, was born in Caithness, Scotland. He joined the army in 1794 and reached the rank of Major-General in 1830. He was Lieutenant-Governor of New South Wales 1825-1827. In 1832, he resigned from the Army to take up his land grant at Mount Pleasant, Bathurst, purchasing further land in succeeding years. he is reputed to have been the first to keep sheep in the district. Of his surviving children, Caroline married -- Green, Elizabeth married Kirkpatrick Dickson Smythe, who was Presbyterian Minister in Bathurst for 20 years, and Letitia married David Kennedy, manager of the Union Bank of Australia branch in Bathurst. His only surviving son, James Horne, 1825-1920, married Harriett Eliza Boyce (Lalah), and succeeded to the property on his father's death. He had five children, Ellen McDonald, Athol William Wolfe, Annie Athol, Alleyn Athol and Roslyn. The Mount Pleasant estate remained as an entity until 11,000 acres were sold in 1912. The family also owned property at Dubbo and near Harden, N.S.W.
