Alexander Cameron Macdonald, 1828-1917, accountant, surveyor and geographer, was born in New South Wales. After prospecting at Ballarat, Macdonald went to Geelong, where he practiced as a surveyor and was involved in public life. In 1876, he moved to Melbourne as a manager of companies, estate and financial agent, and surveyor. He helped form the Victorian branch of the Royal Geographical Society of Australasia in 1883, and served for 23 years as honorary secretary, treasurer, editor and librarian. He was a member of the Royal Geographical Society, London, as well as of astronomical, historical and scientific societies. He wrote extensively on Australian subjects. - Scope and ContentLetters received by Macdonald, mainly in connection with his office as honorary secretary and treasurer of the Victorian branch of the Royal Geographical Society of Australasia. Correspondents include Henry Ogg Forbes, Sir John Forrest, Ernest Giles, William Landsborough, Sir Henry Brougham Loch, Baron Ferdinand von Mueller, Jean Louis Armand de Quatrefages de Breau and Sir Henry Morton Stanley. Also includes letters to Von Mueller in his capacity as President of the Royal Geographical Society of Australasia
