Sir Augustus Charles Gregory, 1819-1905, explorer and surveyor-general of Queensland, born in England, came with his parents to Western Australia in 1829. He entered the government survey office in Perth in 1841, making his first exploration with his brothers H.C. and F.T. Gregory in 1846, to the North East of Perth. In 1848, he commanded an expedition to examine the course of the Gascoyne River and look for new pasture land.

In 1855-1856, using schooners Tom Thumb and Messenger for transport to and from the Gulf of Carpentaria, Gregory commanded the North Australian Exploring Expedition sent to discover traces of Ludwig Leichhardt. He followed the Victoria River to its source, then crossed Northern Australia to Burketown in Queensland and reached Brisbane via the Gilbert, Burdekin and Fitzroy Rivers. He was awarded the Founder's Medal of the R.G.S. In 1858, Gregory made a second attempt to trace Leichhardt, and travelled through Central Australia via the Warrego and Barcoo past Lake Torrens to Adelaide. In December 1859, he became Surveyor-General of Queensland, and in November 1882, a member of the Legislative Council.
