  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

    Philip Gidley King, 1758-1808, joined the Navy in 1770, and in 1786 sailed in the Sirius with Arthur Philip, who appointed him commandant of Norfolk Island. In 1800, King was appointed Lieutenant-Governor of New South Wales. Friction developed between King and officers of the New South Wales Corps, owing to his efforts to stop them trading, particularly in spirits. In 1806, King resigned and returned to England in poor health, and died in London in 1808
