    John Thomas Smith, 1816-1879, publican, politician and landowner, was born in Sydney. In 1837, he arrived in Melbourne and was elected Melbourne city councillor in 1842; he was later elected Mayor and M.L.C. He was a prominent freemason and was the first mason to be initiated in Victoria. He owned town property and stations in New South Wales and Victoria
