  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

    George Augustus Selwyn, 1809-1878, first bishop of New Zealand, was born in England, went to Cambridge, was ordained deacon in 1833 and was appointed Bishop of New Zealand in 1846. The diocese also covered Melanesia. In 1848, Selwyn made a preliminary voyage to the island on H.M.S. Dido. Selwyn was appointed Bishop of Lichfield in 1868, while on a visit to England and died at Lichfield in 1878
